Antibiotic misuse contributes to adverse patient outcomes and antimicrobial resistance. This activity will review evidence-based antibiotic prescribing, antimicrobial stewardship principles, appropriate treatment selection, and strategies to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use while improving patient safety and clinical outcomes

  1. Differentiate between clinical presentations that require antibiotic therapy and those where antibiotics are not normally indicated, based on current evidence and guidelines.
  2. Apply antimicrobial stewardship principles, including patient education to explain treatment decisions and address expectations and common side effects regarding antibiotic use.
  3. Understand the dangers of and reasons behind antimicrobial resistance emergence in the community .
